Our Legacy
Trailblazers in Personal Injury Law
In the 1920s, one of our founding fathers, Henry E. Cohen, became one of the first lawyers in the country to represent individuals injured in accidents. His son-in-law, Jacob D. Fuchsberg, continued in this practice and joined him in forming Cohen & Fuchsberg. Jack Fuchsberg expanded the firm to represent even more of the legal issues that affect individuals, families, and communities.
Fuchsberg Tradition of Excellence Heralded by New York Courts
Taking the lead from Henry Cohen, Jack Fuchsberg became one of the most influential and outstanding trial lawyers in America. While in private practice, he was the first lawyer to win a personal injury verdict of over $1 million. His reputation for excellence continued when he was a Judge on the Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court. He was praised particularly for championing individual rights. He served in this capacity for nine years, and in 1983, founded our current firm.
The Fuchsberg Commitment to Educating and Elevating the Legal Profession
Jack Fuchsberg, Henry Cohen, and the members of the present day Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm share a lifelong commitment to improving the quality of the legal profession and ensuring that vigilant lawyers protect individual rights. Jack Fuchsberg was a founder and first president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He was also a founder of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, which has trained more trial lawyers than any other organization. The Jacob D. Fuchsberg Hall at New York University Law School was the first facility dedicated to training lawyers in counseling skills, and the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center at Touro College in Long Island is a renowned law school emphasizing trial practice.
The members of the present day Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm are actively involved in professional associations—we make it a priority to ensure that the legal profession continues to advance and further protects individual rights.
Our injury lawyers have leadership positions in:
- The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, which was co-founded by Jacob Fuchsberg
- Trial Lawyers For Public Justice
- New York State Trial Lawyers’ Association
- The New York State Bar Association
- The Association of the Bar of the City of New York
We also lend support to several not-for-profit legal organizations including the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the Roscoe Pound Foundation, and the Center for Law and Social Justice.
The Fuchsberg Commitment to Community
The Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm is a proud sponsor of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organization that provides love and comfort to children with serious and life-threatening illnesses. In addition, for many years, we have supported the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which provides vital funding to research possible treatments for breast cancer.

“While I can't change the course of what's occurred, I can certainly assist, hopefully, in providing people with the ability to care for themselves financially or to somehow get some recompense for the ills caused by other people.”—Leslie Debra Kelmachter
