Roudup the herbicide is used universally around the world for killing weeds. Better known as Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup weed killer, is the most widely used herbicide in the world by both individuals and in large-scale agricultural applications. Roundup has been on the market for almost 45 years and is used for killing off weeds in yards or crops. It is also used by commercial parks and golf courses. In all, consumers in the United States use around 275 million pounds of Roundup and similar herbicides each year.
Monsanto, a subsidiary of the Bayer Company, launched Roundup in 1974 after it learned that its active component, Glyphosate kills weeds. This is done by preventing vital proteins that a weed requires for growth. However, Glyphosate has also caused thousands of people to develop Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and other various types of cancer.
Confirmation has come out over the years that Monsanto recognized the risks associated with Glyphosate and unfortunately covered it up.

Glyphosate or Roundup weed killer has been associated with different kinds of cancer for many years. August 2018 was the time when Roundup was first accountable for someone contracting cancer – a retired groundskeeper was granted $289 million by a San Francisco jury on August 10, 2018. The jury stated that Roundup concentrate caused the groundskeeper to contract terminal cancer. The jury also stated that the manufacturer, Monsanto, knew this product was dangerous.
Afterward, thousands of Roundup claims have been filed by victims and their loved ones alleging they contracted cancer as a result of being exposed to Roundup. The groundskeeper’s case was the first to go to trial. However, Monsanto maintains that Roundup is not carcinogenic.
Researchers and scientists also claim there is a link between Glyphosate and deadly forms of cancer, including:
- Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
- Brain Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Lung Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Exposure
Those who have the most exposure to Roundup and other similar weed killers have the highest risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
In general, most of them work with the herbicide or have regular exposure in the workplace. This may include:
- Farmers
- Agricultural Workers
- Landscapers
- Golf Course Caregivers
- Park Landscaping Staff
Who Manufactures Roundup?
Manufactured by the agrochemical giant Monsanto, Glyphosate is the key ingredient in a variety of commercial herbicides, most notably the Roundup family of products. This plant-killing chemical is so pervasive in homes and farms around the world that anyone can be exposed to it.
Exposure to roundup or herbicides containing glyphosate can include:
- Breathing the air near a sprayed area
- Touching sprayed plants
- Drinking from a contaminated water supply
- Eating food grown in treated soil
Whether you live in a city, suburb, farm, or rural area, you are at risk of exposure to glyphosate.
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Roundup
It took until 2015 for any major organization to speak out about the cancer risk associated with glyphosate-based herbicides. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer — an arm of the World Health Organization — spoke out against products containing Glyphosate.
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (also known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, NHL, or sometimes just lymphoma) is cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s immune system. It develops in a very specific way and affects the body’s white blood cells. Like all cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphoma can be deadly if not caught early and treated aggressively.
Recent Lawsuit Verdicts
In May 2019, a California jury awarded a couple more than $2 billion in a verdict against Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer. This is the third recent court decision involving claims that the company’s Roundup weed killer caused cancer. The jury in Alameda County, just east of San Francisco, ruled that the couple, Alva and Alberta Pilliod of Livermore, Calif., contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma because of their use of the glyphosate-based herbicide. They were each awarded $1 billion in punitive damages and an additional $55 million in collective compensatory damages. The verdict represents the third such legal setback for the company in California since mid-2018. In March, a San Francisco jury awarded $80 million to a man who blamed his cancer on his extensive use of Roundup. In August 2018, another San Francisco jury awarded $289 million to a fourth plaintiff.
